As part of the project, we managed to adapt and develop the old school block. A comprehensive center was created - a center of social services. A Day-Care Center, a psychological support center, an environmental care center and rehabilitation center are located in the part adapted to the public's disposal. The Day-Care center is open for the people dependent due to their old age, disabilities, who need care support because of lack of their family or temporary absence of their family. 15 people can benefit a short-term care (up to 3-4 months) of the center at the same time.

Why was the project undertaken?

20 years of experience in home hospice care made it able to discern social needs regarding care for the terminally ill and for other dependants, including elderly people or people suffering from long-term illnesses. There was no stationary facility for terminally ill people in Sosnowiec, and home care is not always sufficient. There are also shortage of institutions providing short-term care, which would be a bridge between the hospital and the target place of stay of the dependants and at the same time people who have no one who would take care of them. Despite the existence of several day centers for the elderly in the city, there was no facility that would accept elderly dependent people who require more care, both in terms of caring as well as rehabilitation and psychological care.

Recognition of these needs was the main factor contributing to the fact that as soon as in 2009 the decision to build a stationary center was made. Fundraising for this purpose was launched, and in 2014, we have recognized the possibilities of co-financing from EU funds as part of the projects ROP for Śląskie Voivodeship 2014-2020. The possibility of obtaining subsidies has definitely accelerated the implementation of our investment plans.

What has been achieved?

The building of a mining school intended for destruction with a large plot of land was transferred to the association by the Sosnowiec Commune for 1% of the value. As part of the project, we managed to adapt and develop the old school block. A comprehensive center was created - a center of social services. A Day-Care Center, a psychological support center, an environmental care center and rehabilitation center are located in the part adapted to the public's disposal. There is also an information point where you can get the information on where and what kind of care assistance families can obtain. The extended part contains a center with 10 rooms for two or three persons, equipped with sanitary conveniences, as well as a large integration lobby, where patients can eat meals, meet their families and feel at home.  The center also has a room for volunteers and a training room. It was also possible to renovate a flat adjacent to the center, and now it functions as an assisted living apartment. The center has its own kitchen.

Who uses/benefits from the effects of the project?

The center is to provide a broadly understood care.

The Day-Care center is open for the people dependent due to their old age, disabilities, who need care support because of lack of their family or temporary absence of their family. 15 people can benefit the help of the center at the same time. It is a short-term care, up to 3-4 months.

Caregivers of the terminally ill and the dependants, as well as the patients themselves may benefit from psychological support. This help may be also provided for people who have just learned about their illness or illness of their loved ones. The support will also be provided for the mourning persons. If necessary, we will provide psychological help also to people who need it for reasons other than those mentioned above.

Rehabilitation will be available to people who need it for various reasons.

The center will be available to terminally ill people who need 24/7 care due to disease progression and in case of whom home care is no longer sufficient. We will also provide short-term care for people who, after leaving the hospital, have no one who would take care of them, and during this time the Social Welfare Centre will look for a place for them to stay.

The short-term care will be available to caregivers who, for various reasons, cannot take care of their relatives for a short period of time. The center can accommodate up to 16 patients at the same time.

The center also can provide environmental care, under which the caregivers take care of the patients at their homes. Up to 15 people can take advantage of this care at the same time.

The assisted living apartment can accommodate up to 3 persons at the same time. It can be used by people who have housing problems, are waiting for help from the Social Welfare Centre and at the same time are dependent, ill.

What are the main benefits of the project?

The main benefit of the project is to increase the availability of care services in our city, and there are still shortage of them as compared to the needs. Terminally ill people who have to wait for admission to centers in other cities can stay in our center. Caregivers of the dependants provide a wide range of care services. They can themselves take advantage of psychological support, counseling support and trainings on care for dependent persons.

The patients can benefit from comprehensive nursing, medical, therapeutic, psychological and rehabilitation care.
