Changing Silesia together - part 4

Grzegorz Puda
Minister of Funds and Regional Policy

Dear Readers,

Silesia is the industrial heart of our country and at the same time ? a region facing enormous challenges related to improving the quality of the environment. Money from the European Funds (2021-2027) is an opportunity for further development of the region.

To date, Silesia has made exemplary use of the European Funds. The province was the largest beneficiary of regional programs for 2014-2020. EUR 3.47 billion was well invested. The benefits for residents can be seen everywhere, in all areas of life. New roads were built, railroads were upgraded, and the comfort of travelers was significantly improved. The region’s authorities also provided for efficient urban transportation. Modern tramways and buses hit the streets and improvements were made to communications infrastructure.

The EU money was also spent on flood defenses such as Racibórz Dolny reservoir on the Odra River. It improved protection against flood for the residents of three provinces – Silesia, Opole, and Lower Silesia.

The authorities remembered about education, broad access to cultural heritage and health care as well. At this point, the Silesian Center for Heart Disease in Zabrze must be mentioned. It received a total of 41 million PLN from national programs so that it could serve patients across the country even better.

The projects presented in the e-publication are an excellent example of close cooperation between the Silesian Voivodeship Board and the Ministry of Funds and Regional Policy. Together we are focused on modern economy, digital development and ecology.

The region will receive massive support from the EU budget in the 2021-2027 financial framework ? a record 5 billion EUR, i.e. more than 23 billion PLN. The money will provide more opportunities for development. This is a tremendous chance for the province to introduce further innovations, improve regional economy and support new beneficiaries. Silesia will become an even more modern and friendly place to live.

I believe that current investments, as well as the future financial support, will contribute to faster socio-economic development throughout the province”.

Jakub Chełstowski
Marshall of the Silesia Voivodeship

Dear Readers,

Silesia is a region shaped on the foundation of black gold and the ethos of hard work. Subjected to rapid processes of industrialization and later transformation, it was a place growing at the clash of cultures, where traditions and human fates blended. Today, this heritage is exploited by the best ambassadors of regional identity – the locals. Thanks to them, the Silesian province emanates with positive energy, diversity and initiatives that take us into the future, respecting past at the same time.

In this e-publication we present to you thirteen projects implemented with the support of the Regional Operational Program of the Silesian Voivodeship for 2014-2020. They have noticeably improved the quality of local communities’ life. This is confirmed by the residents themselves. If you want to see how much effort we put into implementation of these initiatives, just follow the path of the EU-supported projects. Visit Silesian Planetarium in Chorzow, a park in Pszczyna, the Historic Ignacy Mine in Rybnik, the Castle in Czerwionka-Leszczyny or the Climbing and Strength Sports Center in Bytom. Apart from unforgettable moments, sometimes filled with emotions, it will be a great opportunity to see that we have made good use of our presence in the structures of the European Union.

I hope that presented projects will become an inspiration to take on new challenges. Especially, since there are more years of intensive spending of the EU subsidies ahead. Our region will receive more than 5 billion euros in the 2021-2027 timeframe. These are enormous resources that the province has never had before. Thanks to them, we will be able to take another civilization leap. This is a chance for more modern and friendly workplaces, better air quality, greener energy, and improved economy. It’s also an opportunity for all of us involved in the EU projects to change our daily routines and make our life better.
